Working Smart
Making informed decisions by breaking things down into measurable practical improvements to optimize the path of discipline the athlete is already walking.
Impactful Moment:
One moment that heavily impacted me was in May of 2024 at a coastal rowing competition in Costa Rica. I was rowing into the beach, about to jump out of the boat and run through the finish line. In the last half of the race, my opponent had fully overtaken me and was already running by the time I got to the beach. As I turned to jump, I saw him far ahead. All logic says I had already lost the race, but all I heard was my coach, Marc, yelling, “You can do it! Yes, you can! Yes, you can!”
I caught up by the end of the 5-second sprint but still lost by a photo finish. If I had believed earlier in the race, I would have run past him and won. I finished closer than I thought I could ever get, but I don’t think that is what mattered.
What stands out is how my coach believed in me—just like he always had—even though the race looked like it was over. I was the one who had concluded that it was a loss before I even hit the beach. The support my coach gave me was stronger belief than I had in myself.
We sit so long amid our circumstances, fueling our hypercritical minds to instill these limitations of what we can and cannot do. We can mitigate this habit, but the belief and guidance of someone outside of our mind’s “walls” is an irreplaceable resource that can help us rewrite the limits in our lives.
